The almost unpronounceable “XXXXX”, ARCA`s first album since her Kick series (2020 - 21) and third symbol titled album arrives at a particularly interesting time in Arca`s career. The first symbol album &&&&& released in 2013, wasn`t singular or vastly different than her other albums. Matter of fact, it is a relatively short album which might get overlooked if not for its quirky cover art. @@@@@ however was an earthquake.
It deserves a time stamp of what was and would come to be. It marked the beginning and end of ARCA in ways neither her audience or even herself would really calculate clearly. @@@@@ was released literally at the beginning of the pandemic in Feb 2020 while the second ground zero of Covid, New York City, was suffering mass quarantine. Vibrant and aggressive, it fit the mood of that year perfectly; an intense “collage” of mini tracks sewn together into a masterpiece that is still strangely labeled a single in Apple tunes. It didn`t get a vinyl release and was put on sale cheaper than her other work despite its one hour length. When I found it, I bought it immediately it thinking it would be a nice beginning segue to her other work. That never happened as @@@@@ is as cutting edge as you can get.
@@@@@ also marked her first collaboration with artist Frederik Heyman, a dynamic futurist who understood Arca`s aesthetic so well, amplifying it 10 times over with the standout five covers of the KICK series and the videos that were made. He helped define the new Arca aesthetic, part experimental machine, part human. Very relatable to anyone in love with the philosophy of HR Giger. Very important to note that the cover is the first showing Arca herself full body. None of her previous albums graced her fully on the cover. Once of the league of famous shadow producers, Arca stepped out and became the music and concept simultaneously.
Despite all of these important factors, the shine of @@@@@ was dimmed immediately by the first KICK album in
June of the same year. Kinder to the pop public, KICK was everything that @@@@@ wasn`t. Heavily beat driven, latin pop/ rap coated, danceable, easily digestible to anyone glued to Spotify, KICK was all her mainstream tendencies bundled together. And Arca became the protagonist in the story. KICK is a lovely album but a departure in concept from previous recorded work.
KICK wasn`t just an album but a torch that grew brighter for herself and for others. Arca`s transgender identity has been well integrated in her artistic identity since the beginning but with KICK it became the theme and the fire behind the beats. It became central to her artistic image with new audiences who didn`t know the underground diva in her many NYC performances. @@@@@ showed Arca almost nude but in a very Blade Runner type digital montage. KICK`s cover was more fashion avant garde intended to signal to the LGBTQ+ community to take notice. With the freshness of KICK`s pop avant blend of reggaeton vocals, silky synths, and beats posted in lush production paired with trans-identity politics, doors opened that hadn`t before allowing Arca to literally evolve a much more flamboyant presence in media. A monumental kick off of 5 KICK albums within just over a year progressed to numerous magazine covers. Progressed to even larger concerts than before. Progressed to djing for Beyonce`s larger than life concerts. The progression was acute and the underground diva was no longer underground.
And that is where we find ourselves now. The KICK series is over and XXXXX finds Arca moving forward in her search for more vibrant sonorities and reaching back to her older self. One might expect an artist with such presence in mainstream circles to play it safe. Make a large scale singles album akin to KICK I. And that is obviously not Arca.
In XXXXX, each track is separated to be listened to at one`s leisure unlike its predecessor. But the urge to be a pop star with reggaeton / rap posturing is not here. This is a dirty, all night dark light, neon light, florescent light - I`m not sure if I can go to work tomorrow - underground dj mix vibe. I doubt Arca will ever come to Japan but this is definitely an album that fits the night time ambience of inner Tokyo club / bar culture. XXXXX is not as groundbreaking as @@@@@ but it has a tight experimental, emotional core which gives it its own soul. The mood of the album arcs from straight up club bangers like “Fxck” and “Willow” to dark emotional sonatas like “Finisher” and “Futurality.” The persona of ARCA on KICK was front and center as a vocalist. XXXXX`s persona sinks back into the mix as just another instrument among her many presets. Arca`s knee jerk natural reaction to return to the ethos introduced on @@@@@ is very welcome.
Welcome because let`s not forget that before the magazine covers, Arca besides being a sought out producer, was a dj and performer at GHE20G0TH1K, one of NYC`s most famous underground avant - queer parties and a provocateur as a radical performance artist, who among many things sang ballads in Spanish while in high heels standing on a car turned upside down in the middle of NYC half naked. Throughout Arca`s career, the only rules were “no rules” to expression. Becoming famous often caps people`s expression but luckily Arca didn`t fall for that mystique.
XXXXX is a kaleidoscope of emotions and moods given birth through sound. The 16 tracks are not as interlocked as @@@@@ but the emotions are on a higher scale. You will probably notice though that XXXXX ends quickly. 16 tracks at only total 47 minutes total is kinda brief in 2026. I do find with each listen, the work becomes more engaging opening up like a flower with a sweet smell inside. But I will admit. Even with my
enjoyment of the total work, it is the first 4 and last 3 songs that truly invade my conscious.
I do cast doubt though on who will like this. The album lacks standout singles. This is not KICK in anyway. In fact the whole rollout for the album was a giant experiment in visuals and new digital expressionism broadcast online with moments of Arca walking amongst ruins and blood. Performance over pop culture popularity.
My mind wonders because now Arca is an icon for many people. Especially for the LGBTQ+ community. Hard ass naked bass beats painted over reggaeton vocals translates well for the kids in the club but extreme instrumental music is hard to dj.
The problem of being an icon is new fans learn to love you because of who they perceive you to be, how you make them feel seen, and who they think you are. Not necessarily for the music first. I do hope they all become fans of every album and every time period. But being an icon often supersedes that.
To be clear Arca deserves her icon status. The music is deserving. That goes without saying. Putting that to the side, Arca holds a torch for many having very publicly transitioned to being a trans woman, having openly discussed every surgery, every type of treatment and medication whether successful or not, and talked of those personal emotional struggles while giving support to others in similar situations around the world and especially in her own home of Venezuela. Being an icon means showing people there is a path toward success - mental, spiritual, artistic, and financial. Especially for the LGBTQ+ young people who may need that light shown upon them. But will they “get” this album?
Beyond this, I welcome back this Arca and their Arca. The adventurer Arca, the musical saboteur Arca, the melodic nihilist Arca, the avant garde Arca ....they all give me great hope that despite the horrible news everyday of war and xenophobia, this is still a great time for music.
